INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION IN RUSSIAN AND AMERICAN STORIES, SEPARATED BY THE XX CENTURY: WHAT DETERMINES QUANTITATIVE RATIOS OF NARRATION TO COMMUNICATION AND DIRECT TO COMPRESSED SPEECH?

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY 4.0).

The article examines ratios of narrative and communicative components in Russian and American realistic stories at the turn of XIX–XX and XX–XXI centuries, and also the ratios (in these very texts) between two categories of the communicative structure of the text – direct and compressed speech. It is shown that three main factors of differences (belonging to one of two national literary traditions; diachronic distinctions; the grammatical person of the narration – the 1st or 3rd) influence with a different force on different text categories in which interpersonal communication is implemented: on the one hand, on a ratio of a narration and communication, on the other, – on a ratio of a direct and compressed speech. Typological similarity in vectors of development in in the influence of diachrony and the national-cultural factor is noted, however the influence of the grammatical form of narration becomes less predictable.
