Based on dictaphone recordings, the article investigates some peculiarities of oral scientific speech of postgraduate technical students, emphasizing its significant features (informational and pre-made content, its official and monological character, means of direct adress) and highlighting the role of pragmatics (extralinguistic factors). On the basis of the experiment, it is proved that the story about academic research might be considered as a special scientific speech genre with some traits of popular science and educational variety of it. The presence of the non-specialist in a given field of knowledge as an addressee was the condition of the experiment, while the speakers were experts in nanotechnology and IT. Another experimental conditions were informality and friendly atmosphere, which contributed to the significant variability of the stories: narratives often included doubts, changes in unfinished statements, some digressions, that were common to oral communication. However, the main goal of the speakers and their adressee was to reach an understanding on the subject matter of the postgraduate student’s research. It leads us to the conclusion that such story might be recognized as one of the genres of the oral academic discourse. Special attention is given to the use of terminology and its explanation, sentence construction and length, clarifications and refinement, as well as the difference between the speech of the same addressees in their articles, which conformed fully to the requirements of the academic discourse in its written form and the corresponding genre. The experiment proved the effectiveness of this kind of task in the preparation of students for speeches at seminars, scientific festivals and conferences.
