ABOUT THE PLACE OF THE CONCEPT OF “GENRE” IN LANGUAGE COMPETENCE: ON THE MATERIAL OF EXPRESSION “IN GENRE…” IN THE RUSSIAN NATIONAL CORPUS

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY 4.0).

The article studies contexts with the expression “in the genre” in the Russian National Corpus (RNC) to clarify the lexicalized aspects of the communicativespeech phenomena in genre typification. There are two substantial groups of contexts: 1) traditional terminological “Aristotelian” meaning of “in the genre” (meaning that genres exist in artistic creation and art in general); 2) other meanings: a) desemantized “in the genre”, approaching the semantics of the preposition; b) non-literary specific unconventional-terminological meaning (as a linguistic term – “in the genre of a compliment”, “in the genre of a dispute”); c) anomalies and/or language game (including synesthetic use). The main types of meanings and spheres of use of “in the genre” are studied in detail: art genres (they account for a third of all contexts), cinema, theater, music, painting, scientific discourse, political discourse, journalism/essays, religious discourse, television, fashion, photography, variety art, joke, architecture, advertising, circus, business discourse. The research shows which spheres of life/culture/communication are viewed as the phenomena to be called “genre” by the native speakers. The expansion of the concept of “genre” is revealed: the authors of the RNC texts use more eccentric up abnormal combinations more often than traditional terminological combinations (genre of novel, genre of prose).
