ON DIGLOSSIA OF GENRES IN CHURCH AND RELIGIOUS STYLE OF RUSSIAN LANGUAGE

This is an open access article distributed under the terms of Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License (CC-BY 4.0).

The article examines the language situation in modern church and religious discourse and the specifics of religious style genres in contemporary Russian language. It also raises some of the key problems of Russian philology on the nature of diglossia, its origins, as well as specifics of Slavic and Russian diglossia in the Russian linguistic culture during its various historic periods, and place and role of Church Slavonic throughout the history of Russian language. The concepts of the functional bilingualism nature in the history of Church Slavonic and Russian languages are specified. The author proves an idea that interpretation of a sociolinguistic situation as an example of functional bilingualism should be attributed not to the religious style of Russian language but to a particular sphere of communication, a particular discourse where this style is used. The thesis that contemporary Russian communicative space still implicitly contains Church Slavonic/Russian diglossia is confirmed.
